One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “What’s the best time of day for our session?” The light can completely change the mood and style of your photos, so the timing does matter—but don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! Whether you're planning a family session, senior portraits, or a sweet couples shoot, here's a breakdown of golden hour versus midday sessions, and how to decide which is best for you.
Golden hour is the time shortly after sunrise or just before sunset—when the sun is low in the sky and everything is bathed in warm, glowing light. It’s often described as the most flattering natural light, and it adds such a soft, romantic, and magical feel to your photos.
Soft, even lighting with fewer shadows
Warm tones that look gorgeous on all skin types
A dreamy, golden glow that makes everything feel magical
Outdoor family or maternity sessions
Senior portraits with a warm, golden vibe
Couples sessions full of connection and light
Even just 15–20 minutes during golden hour can make a huge difference. If you're after that sun-kissed, natural look—this is your window!
Midday (between 11am–2pm) brings the brightest, most direct sunlight of the day. While the light can be a bit harsh, with the right planning (and a few tricks up my sleeve!), it can still result in beautiful, bold images—especially in the right setting.
Bright, clear photos with vibrant colors
Great for busy families or little ones who do better earlier in the day
Ideal if your schedule doesn’t allow for evening or early morning
Find open shade or use natural backdrops to soften the light
Choose a location with tall trees, buildings, or covered areas
Don’t worry—I’ll guide you every step of the way!
It all depends on your preferences and schedule! Here’s a quick guide:
If you love warm, glowy photos: Go for golden hour—especially if you're drawn to soft, natural light and a peaceful vibe.
If you have little ones or limited availability: Midday might be best. We’ll work around the light to make sure you still get stunning images.
Some of my favorite sessions happen when we split things up a bit—maybe starting earlier in the afternoon and finishing with a few golden hour shots. It gives variety and helps capture different moods throughout the session.
No matter when your session takes place, I’ll help you find the perfect light and setting to make your photos feel like you. Still unsure what time is best? Let’s talk about your vision, your people, and what works best for your schedule. I’m here to help every step of the way!
